So, what is taekwondo, anyway?
Taekwondo is a traditional Korean martial art that began as a defense art developed as a way of training the mind and body. When we break the word “taekwondo” down, “tae” “kwon” “do,” you’ll see that the English translation reflects the most important concepts behind the martial art. “Tae” meaning foot, leg, or to step on, “kwon” meaning fist or fight, and “do” meaning way or discipline.

There are two commonly practiced styles of taekwondo in the United States: ITF and WT; International Taekwondo Federation style is defined by Choi Hong Hi’s Encyclopedia of Taekwon-do, while World Taekwondo was established to promote the sportive side of Kukkiwon taekwondo and create a more “unified” style of taekwondo. Kukkiwon, or the World Taekwondo Headquarters, are the official taekwondo governing association. WT-Taekwondo is Transcend’s style of choice and practice.

Typical taekwondo training consists of the following: forms, sparring, breaking, and self-defense techniques. During training, a student will be taught fundamental techniques like blocks, kicks, punches, and strikes; building a strong foundation of these techniques is vital for progress and growth within the martial art. Additionally, a student will establish a great sense of self-control, discipline, and confidence throughout their training.

The philosophical basis for taekwondo is known as “The Five Tenets.” They are as follows:
Courtesy
Integrity
Perseverance
Self-control
Indomitable spirit
These tenets are further articulated in an oath: I shall observe the tenets of taekwondo; I shall respect the instructor and seniors; I shall never misuse taekwondo; I shall be a champion of freedom and justice; I shall build a more peaceful world. We strive to exemplify these tenets through our training for a well rounded program that our students will succeed in.
